Selling
Selling items on Artisanstores.com is a great way to make some extra money - and have fun doing it! You can sell a few items that you no longer need, or build your own business.
Here are the basics of listing items for sale:

Find an item you want to sell.
Do some research on Artisanstores.com to get an idea of your item's potential value and best category placement. Search for items similar to yours to find out what other seller's starting prices and categories were.

List your item.
Click Sell in the navigation bar at the top of any Artisanstores.com page. Artisanstores.com 's Sell Your Item form will take you through the process of listing your item step-by-step.

Set your price.
You can set a starting price and allow buyers to place bids, offer a fixed price you'll accept using Buy It Now, or both.

Get paid!
When your listing ends, contact your winning buyer through email or by generating an Artisanstores.com invoice within three business days. Let your buyer know the total price of the item, including your stated shipping costs, and how they can pay you. Offering PayPal allows your buyer to pay you quickly and easily.

Ship the item.
After payment is received, send the item to the buyer's shipping address, specified with their payment or by email.

Leave feedback.
After your successful sale, leave feedback for your buyer, and ask that they do the same.
Bidding
A bid is a promise to purchase an item at the price you offer. If you have any questions about an item, please email the seller before placing your bid. You can email a seller by clicking on his/her username on the item's page.

Our auction software uses a proxy bidding system for all Normal (not Dutch) auctions. This means that if you enter the maximum amount you're willing to spend, our system will start your bidding at the lowest amount required and increase your bids automatically until your limit is reached.

When the auction has closed, the seller and high bidder will receive a notification message by email.
Instant Purchasing
Instant Purchases allows a buyer to purchase an item immediately at a set price. Just look for the Buynow icon next to the listings or search results.

There are two types of Instant Purchase listings available:

Regular Instant Purchase - Bidding is not if effect. You are agreeing to buy the item at the listed price.
Dutch Instant Purchase - Bidding is not if effect. You are agreeing to buy the items at the listed price. The price is per item, therefore you're final price will be the quantity entered above multiplied by the current price.
After the auction-Sell
The end of your listing may be a busy time for you as a seller.

As auctions close, the system will email notifications to the sellers of individual auctions. This notification will include all information necessary to close the sale. It will also indicate whether or not a reserve was met.

If your item sells successfully, there's a lot to do, from contacting your buyer to accepting payment to shipping the item. Please make every effort to make contact as soon as possible after the close of the auction, preferably within 3 days.

If you don't receive any successful bids or something goes wrong with your high bidder, you can use the many tools and options available to solve problems and keep trying to sell your item.

Contacting your buyer
When your listing is over, it's time to get in touch with your winning bidder or Buy It Now buyer. If you're using Invoice, some or all of the information will be emailed to your buyer. If not, you'll need to email your buyer to exchange information. The buyer's email address will be provided in the email announcing the end of your listing.

Ask the buyer for:

The address they'd like the item shipped to
Tell the buyer:

Shipping cost
How you will ship the item to them
When to expect it
Which payment options you accept
The total price
Tax (if applicable)
What if my high bidder won't pay?
Non-Paying bidders face the following consequences through this program:
? First offense: warning
? Second offense: warning
? Third offense: Suspension of Auction Privileges

What to do if you're a seller with a non-paying bidder

Regular Instant Purchase - Bidding is not if effect. You are agreeing to buy the item at the listed price.
Dutch Instant Purchase - Bidding is not if effect. You are agreeing to buy the items at the listed price. The price is per item, therefore you're final price will be the quantity entered above multiplied by the current price.
After the auction-Buy
If you're new to buying on artisanstores.com 's, welcome! Thousands of items, from the practical to the peculiar, are waiting for you.

As auctions close, the system will email notifications to the sellers and high bidders of individual auctions. This notification will include all information necessary to close the sale. It will also indicate whether or not a reserve was met.

The bidder and the seller should contact each other to discuss payment and shipping. Please make every effort to make contact as soon as possible after the close of the auction, preferably within 3 days.

What if I won, but my Seller won't sell to me?
First, if the auction is a Reserve Price Auction and the Reserve is not met, the Seller is not obligated to sell the item to you.

If this is a listing without a Reserve Price or Seller exclusions (for example: Seller states they won't sell to buyers with Negative Feedback), the Seller is obligated to sell to you.

What if I can't reach my seller?
Like you, Sellers can have emergencies, illnesses, or computer problems. Check your Seller's Feedback to see what other users have said. If there is mostly Positive Feedback with little or no mention of problems, be patient. Your Seller may not be able to respond to you right away for legitimate reasons.

If you get no responses through email, you can request your Seller's phone number. After a reasonable amount of time, if you are still unable to contact the seller via email or phone, you can leave appropriate Feedback to alert other bidders about your experience.

General Search Tips
Try different search words
There are many words to describe any item. Imagine which words a seller might use for the item you're seeking. Try several different options and combinations but use just two or three words at a time to be sure you get a variety of results.

Use specific words instead of general ones
For example, a search for Beatles Listinger will return fewer, more-targeted listings than a search for Beatles.

For a closer match, specify a date, color or brand
For example, to find a particular Barbie item, don't just type Barbie in the search box. If you're looking for a Barbie dress made in the 1960s, enter: Barbie dress 1960. If you want only red dresses, type: Barbie red dress. Remember: be specific and narrowly define your search!

Search titles and descriptions to get more matches
Search always looks for your keywords in the title of the items for sale. Click on search titles and descriptions under the search box on our "Search" form to also search item descriptions. You'll get many more results.

Don't use extra punctuation
Only use punctuation in your search if you expect it to be in the item title or description you're searching. Examples include t-shirt, N-Sync and Dr. Watson.

Consider browsing
If you're not searching for something specific, try browsing the category listing pages for surprising discoveries.

Categories
Browse through the categories on the left to get acquainted with our top-level categories. These categories also have subcategories that are more specific and will help buyers find your item more easily. You can choose a subcategory in the Category section of the Sell Your Item form.

Choose a Category - Help buyers find your item easily
Doing some research before you list your item can help you choose the most successful category for your item.

Try these tips:
Think creatively about your item. For example, maybe the item you first thought belonged in Bikes is better suited for Parts and Accessories.
Consider a number of possible categories. Search for items on Artisanstores.com 's that are similar to yours and notice which categories they are listed in. Try several different keyword searches and see if you find particularly active categories.

Note: All items must be listed within relevant categories. Artisanstores.com 's may move your listing if it's listed in a category that is unrelated to the item you are selling.

I'm having problems with Category Listings.
Peruse through the category selections to find the best category for your item. If you are still unsure about what category to choose try searching for similar items to see what other sellers have chosen as their categories. Make sure the category you choose is specific to your item. This will help potential bidders find your item.

I can't find the category I'm trying to list in.
The category lists can change from time to time. Either a category is moved or sometimes it's discontinued. If your category is no longer found in it's normal area, we suggest that you complete a search for other items, or the identical item you're selling. Once you have the search up, you can look through a few of the auctions and see what category those items are using. You can Click here to suggest a new category that was never listed on Artisanstores.com.
Listing types
You may choose either a Auction or an Instant Purchase. You may select for Dutch auction or Dutch Instant Purchase as well.
A Dutch auction or Instant Purchase is one in which you have several identical items to auction off, and is more convenient than entering your items as several separate auctions.
If your quantity is 1 or if you'll be selling to only one bidder leave the 1 in the box. If you are selling more than one of the same item, change number in Dutch Auction to quantity you have.
Dutch listings
A Dutch auction is an auction of 2 or more identical items. All winning bidders pay the same price, which is the lowest successful bid. For example, if a seller has 3 of a particular item available, and the bidding goes like this:

Bidder A, 30 - winning
Bidder B, 30 - winning
Bidder C, 28 - winning
Bidder D, 24 - loosing
Bidder E, 22 - loosing

Bidders A, B, and C will get the item for 28, the lowest successful bid.
Proxy bidding is not used on Dutch auctions.

Relisting items
Relisting Unsold Items
You can relist items through the Unsold Listings View in your Account Manager. The "Relist" column shows whether your item has been relisted or not. If the status reads "n/a", your unsold listing has already been relisted. If the status reads "Relistt", the item has not been relisted.

To Relist An Item
While in the Unsold Listings View in your Account Manager, click on the "Relist" link next to your unsold listing. (it the link reads n/a means the item has been Relisted already). You will be taken to the Listing New Item form, which will be already filled in for you with all of the listing information. Review your listings and confirm the new listing.

To Auto-Relist An Item
Have the system automatically Relist your "Unsold" Auctions and Instant Purchases. While in the Listing New Item form View in the Timing Your Item area, check "Yes" to auto-Listing your listing then select the number of days your listing will run until. When this function is enabled, the listing will run and keep Relisting until it sells.

What will happen if I list or Relisted Prohibited, Questionable or Infringing Items on Artisanstores.com ?
Violations of Artisanstorest.com 's policies could jeopardize your account status. Not only can you get suspended from Artisanstores.com 's, but you could be sued by a rights owner and prosecuted by criminal authorities. Believe us, it happens and we don't want it to happen to you.

Opening price
Bidding for your auction will start at this price.
The opening price is the lowest price at which you are willing to sell your item (unless you also specify a reserve price). Bidding will start at this price.

Tip: Sellers have found that setting the opening price too high may discourage bidding.

If you are using the Buy Out format, you'll enter a Fix Price in the same field (opening price), simply enter the price at which you wish to sell your item or items.

Reserve price
If a seller specifies a reserve price for a particular auction, he/she is not obligated to sell the item for less. If the high bidder's price does not meet the reserve, he/she does not have to complete the sale.

The seller specifies the reserve price when he or she lists an item, which is an amount over the minimum bid. Then when the auction begins, it will start at the minimum bid amount that the seller also chooses. During a Reserve Price Auction, a notice will be displayed on the listing page next to the item's current price.

Artisanstores.com 's will never disclose a seller's reserve price to bidders. When a bidder's maximum bid is equal to or greater than the reserve price, the item's current price is raised to the reserve price. At this time, the item information will indicate that the reserve price has been met. The bidder is also notified that his or her bid met the reserve.

Buy Now
When you see the icon "Buy Now" next to a listing or see a Buy It Now price listed on an item page, you have a special opportunity to get that item right away without waiting for an online auction to end.

Using Buy It Now is simple.

  1. Decide whether you're willing to buy the item for the Buy It Now price. Please remember, shipping and handling charges are not included in the Buy It Now price. You may need to contact the seller to determine the total price of the item. The shipping cost and other charges will be displayed in the listing description.
  2. Click the Buy It Now button at the bottom of the item page and enter your Artisanstores.com Username and password.
  3. You'll see a Buy It Now confirmation message. Continue only if you are sure about buying the item.
  4. Pay for the item, and the seller ships it to you.

The Buy It Now option is only shown on listings until an item receives its first bid, or, for a Reserve Price Auction, when the reserve is met. This means that when you see an item has both a Buy It Now price and a first bid price listed, you will need to act quickly!

Listing with images
How to add a photo to your listing

Step 1 - Choose your Equipment
Make your item description come to life with a clear, vivid photo. Here are some tips for getting started.

What will you use to create a digital photo of your item?
Digital camera lets you snap a picture of your item and immediately have it in digital format, ready to edit with your computer. Your digital camera will come with instructions on how to transfer (upload) photos to your computer.
Regular camera and scanner take a picture with a film camera, have it developed, and then use a scanner to convert your picture into an electronic image. You may be able to place small, flat items like stamps or jewelry directly in your scanner (and not need a camera).

Note: Many copy centers such as Kinkos or Mail Boxes Etc. can do the scanning for you.
Film-to-digital-image service you can get digital images made from your rolls of film with digital image services. You may be able to access your digital photos on a CD or on the Web.

Step 2 - Create a Great Photo
Here are some  tips from experienced Artisasnstores.com 's sellers for taking photos that will make your item look its best and buyers confidence!

Good: Shows nice detail. Bad: It's too far, too dark, no details!
  • Use proper lighting. Many people find natural, outdoor lighting best. Indoors or out, light your item thoroughly.
  • Consider a backdrop. If appropriate, consider using a plain, colored fabric backdrop to make your item stand out. Don't use pure white, as it tends to create too much contrast in your photo. If you don't use a backdrop, be sure to move other things out of the way so your item will really stand out.
  • Get close up! Buyers want to see detail, so really make your item take up the whole frame. Consider taking a close-up of a section of the item in addition to the entire object in order to give buyers a better idea of the item's actual condition.

Step 3 - Edit Your Photo
Once your photo is on your computer hard drive, you can often improve it with photo editing software, which may have come with your digital camera or scanner. You can also download basic editing software from sites like Tucows and Shareware.com.

Tips:

  1. Remove unnecessary background.
  2. Balance the contrast and brightness.
  3. Save your edited picture as a JPEG(.jpg) file (file types other than JPEG and
  4. GIF should not be used). Here's how (in most programs):

Choose Save As from the File menu.
Name your file.
Select JPEG (.jpg) or GIF (.gif) from the Save as Type drop-down list.
Planning on hosting your own picture? File size should be under 50 KB (kilobytes) for quick page downloads.

Note: Selecting JPEG or GIF will automatically end your filename with ".jpg" (for example, carphoto will now be carphoto.jpg ).

Host your picture elsewhere
Perhaps your Internet Service Provider (ISP) gives you some space on the Web where you can store your pictures. Or maybe you'd like to try out picture-hosting services like Pongo, Twaze, or PixHost. The Sell Your Item form has a field where you can enter the Web address (URL) of a picture stored on the Web. That picture will be displayed in your listing. To display more than one externally hosted picture on artisanstores.com 's, you'll have to use HTML in your listing.

File transfer software, such as WS_FTP for PCs or Fetch Softworks for Macs will assist in uploading your picture file to your ISP or hosting service.

Step 4 - Add Picture On Listing New Item Form
For Web Hosting
Click on the Web Hosting link to enter the Web address of your hosted picture. This Web address (or URL) will look something like this: http://www.host.com/yourfolder/photo.jpg. You can test the address by typing it into a separate window of your browser. If your picture appears, it works! If not, double-check the address.

If you're using Web Hosting, you're done with this tutorial. Happy selling!

Now your picture is on the Web and ready to help your item sell!

You can see a list of all the sales and purchases you still need to leave feedback for.

How do I decide what type of feedback to leavepositive or negative?
If you had a good experience with a buyer or seller on Artisanstores.com 's, reward them with a positive comment. If you were treated poorly, try to resolve the problem first by contacting the other person. Most problems can be corrected by improving communication. If things are still not resolved, consider leaving a negative comment.

How do I know I have the correct item number when I leave feedback?
Artisanstores.com 's will verify that item numbers match buyers and sellers.

What can I do if I do not agree with a Feedback left by a user on me?
You can place an answer to any Feedback placed on you from the link under Manage Feedback.

Our Listing Policy
Artisanstores.com is exclusively reserved for the sales and purchase of artisanstores.com goods and services.

Our guidelines for listing items are outlined in the User Agreement. To help users properly list items, we've highlighted some listing policies and describe how we handle listing violations when they are reported to us. Please keep in mind the following policies apply to both the auction-style and fixed price formats.

Proper category listing
Items must be listed in the appropriate category.

Policy: Items that don't belong in a category will be moved to the appropriate category.
*******************************************
Choice Auctions
A Choice Listing occurs when a seller allows buyers to choose from a selection of items. Choice Listings can be problematic because the item agreed upon is negotiated offline and can lead to either misrepresentation or fraud.

Policy: Choice Auctions are not allowed and will be ended.
*******************************************

Multi-Listing
The best method to list identical items is through a Dutch Auction format. We understand sellers have reasons to list identical items at the same time. This is permissible as long as the seller can complete the sale of all listings. At any one time you may not promote identical items in more than two (2) listings. This will prevent listing "Flooding".

Policy: If a seller lists in more than one category, the categories must be relevant. Any additional identical listings may be ended.
*******************************************

Links and Credits from your item listing
Artisanstores.com does not allows sellers to place any links in their item listings.

Policy: No Linking is allowed. Artisan Stores provides a Social Network Hub for you to use for this purpose.
*******************************************

Sign Listings
Artisanstores.com does not permit listings that are primarily used to direct a user to a seller's other listings or Store. These types of listings are referred to as "signListings".

Policy: Sign Listing listings are not permitted and will be ended.
*******************************************

Users may not use systems or techniques to circumvent artisanstores.com fees. Some examples include:

  • Offering in a listing the opportunity to purchase the item or other merchandise outside of artisanstores.com .
  • Listings with low prices but unreasonably high shipping or handling costs.
  • Listing an item that requires or offers an additional purchase.
  • Dutch Avoidance - listing a single item and offering additional identical items for sale in the item description. In these situations, the seller typically instructs buyers to indicate the number of items they want, and states that they can get the same price as the item in the listing.

Payment Surcharges
Sellers may not charge artisanstores.com buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Such costs should be built into the price of the item -- this policy reduces the potential for confusion among bidders about the true cost of an item. Further, some forms of payment surcharges, such as credit card surcharges, are forbidden under the laws of many states.
*******************************************

Can a seller add a surcharge to the final price of an artisanstores.com item? Yes, in three instances.

  1. Sellers may charge reasonable shipping and handling fee to the final price of their item, providing that this fee is disclosed up front in the listing. A shipping and handling fee can cover the seller's reasonable costs for mailing, packaging and handling the item. Shipping and handling fees cannot be listed as a percentage of the final sale price.
  2. Sellers may pass along the costs associated with using a third party escrow service, if the buyer chooses to use an escrow service.
  3. Sellers may choose to accept payment in a different currency than the currency listed on artisanstores.com . If the buyer chooses to take advantage of this optional payment method, the seller may pass along to the buyer any costs associated with the currency exchange, provided that the costs are disclosed and agreed to in advance by the buyer.

Profanity
Artisanstores.com does not allow the use of profanity or patently vulgar language. This includes the use of language that is racist, hateful, sexual, or obscene in nature in a public area. This policy extends to text within auction listings, or anywhere else within artisanstores.com.

We make allowances for certain items listed on the core site that may contain profane words that are a part of the title. An example of such an item might be a comic book with profanity in the comic book title. If the profane words are part of a title for the item being sold, we allow sellers to 'blurb' out the bulk of the offending word with asterisks (i.e., s*** or f***).

Policy: The use of profanity on our site is not permitted. Listings that contain profanity will be ended.

Policy: Due to the many difficulties inherent in Internet alcohol and tobacco sales, artisanstores.com will not permit the listings of tobacco related items, wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages on its website. Also, NO LIVE animals will be permitted to be listed. These types of listings will be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions...Click on the Links to open...
What's this blocked user stuff?

On rare occasions, a seller encounters a buyer with whom they have a very negative experience. In that case, they may actually fear the buyer bidding on their goods. Perhaps the buyer is late with payment, or the buyer left negative feedback to the seller on something relatively minor.
The blocked user feature protects the seller's goods from being bid on by anyone the seller "blocks". We don't expect this feature to be used much. It, does, however, give the seller a bit more protection.
Go to the member area, under Selling and click on Block Users. Click on the "Add User" link, then fill in the details and click "Proceed". To modify your blocked users just click on the "Edit" link next to their name or click on "Delete" if you wish to unblock them.

My password/username doesn't work! What do I do?

First be sure you activated your account. Our site generates an activation code and emails it to you when you register. You can have activation code re-sent to you from the Login page if you accidentally deleted our email before activating it.
Passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure you're entering it exactly, using lowercase or capital letters as needed.
You can retrieve a lost password or a lost username from the Lost Password page.
You can also edit your password in the Member Area by clicking "Personal Information" and then on the right side fill in the "Create your password".

What is a reserve price?

What is a Dutch auction?

A Dutch auction is an auction of 2 or more identical items. All winning bidders pay the same price, which is the lowest successful bid. For example, if a seller has 3 of a particular item available, and the bidding goes like this:
Bidder A, 30 - winning
Bidder B, 30 - winning
Bidder C, 28 - winning
Bidder D, 24 - loosing
Bidder E, 22 - loosing
Bidders A, B, and C will get the item for 28, the lowest successful bid.
Proxy bidding is not used on Dutch auctions.

What is proxy bidding?

An automated bidding system where a bidder may enter a maximum price and the auction system will increase his/her bid as necessary until the maximum is reached.
For example, Bidder A is the first bidder on an item whose starting bid is 1. He/She places a maximum bid of 10, which the system holds in confidence until needed. The system places his/her initial bid. Bidder B places a maximum bid of 8. The system automatically bids for Bidder A and Bidder B until Bidder B's maximum bid (8) is surpassed. Since Bidder A's maximum bid is higher than Bidder B's, he/she remains the high bidder.
Our system automatically figures bid increments.

My high bidder (or seller) has not returned my repeated email, and the auction ended a week ago. What should I do?

If you are the seller of the item, you can contact the next-highest bidder to see if he/she is still interested in the item. After a week of trying to get in touch with the original high bidder, it's perfectly acceptable to move on, even if extraordinary circumstances have kept the bidder from responding.

If you are the high bidder of the item, your obligation to purchase the item ends when the seller cannot be reached.

If you have tried email and the message board, you've done your best. In any case, you can use the feedback system to leave either neutral or negative feedback about the user, to help other users decide who to do business with. You may then "Request a Refund" of your listing fees.

I made a mistake on my bid! How do I correct it?

Go to your Member Area, under Bidding and click on "Current Bids". Find the auction in question and click on the "Retract Bid" link. This will remove your bid on the auction. If you wish to bid again you may do so, but you may want to contact the seller first to explain your reason for the bid retraction. Placing a bid makes a binding contract in most states.

My picture isn't showing up (just a red "x")

If you are entering a URL for a picture, then you must be sure that your URL ends in .gif, .bmp, or .jpg. If your URL ends with anything else, then chances are, it is not an image. Our software can only nest an image into your auction, rather than an HTML encoded page.
Think you've got the HTML page instead of the image? Then look at your page, find the image, right click on it. If you see options to save, email, and print picture, then you are on a page of an image rather than the image itself. If you don't know the URL to your image, you can view the source code of your html page to find out where the image is located.
If you are loading an image directly from your computer, you may have encountered a connection break during the upload process. This is more likely to occur if your image is very large. If you need more information about Listinging items with images.

Keywords Watch
( The best thing since toast sliced bread ) When you can't find the item you are after just go to the Members Area and create a Keyword Watch. Artisanstores.com 's policy prohibits members from sending spam, which is defined as an unsolicited, commercial email.

Unsolicited - it must have been sent without the permission of the person who received it.
Commercial - it discusses the buying, selling or trading of any goods or services.

How long should I wait for the seller to contact me?

It is suggested, but not required, that members involved in a transaction on Artisanstores.com 's contact each other within three business days after the listing ends. This does not include weekends or holidays.
Please note that an emergency, illness, or computer problem may keep the seller from contacting you immediately. If the seller doesn't respond to email messages, you can request the seller's phone number.
If you are unable to contact the seller via email or telephone after a reasonable amount of time, you are no longer responsible for purchasing the item. At this point, you might consider leaving feedback to alert other buyers about your experience with the seller.
